Taani's father makes her promise that she marry Surinder. Surinder knows Taani's father for many years. Surinder was Taani's father's student.
Taani marries Surinder as a duty to her father, since this was his last dying wish. She grudgingly marries Surinder, as she was in love with her fiance who died in the accident.
Surinder is in love with Taani, and wants to be good to her. He accepts it when she tells him that she can't be his lover; she can only be a good wife to him.
Later, she joins a dance class and Surinder gets a hair cut and even ends up shaving off his mustache. He dresses differently, and more "hip" when he goes to the dance class. He goes just to watch Taani, but eventually gets pulled into the class to dance. By chance or fate, whatever you prefer, he gets partnered with Taani for a dance competition. His wife does not Recognize him and he decides to change his name and call himself Raj Kapoor.
Now, the story gets interesting. He acts like 2 people, Raj as well as Surinder. He hopes that his wife will see through the difference in his physical appearance and that she will see that they are one and the same person. But she does not.
In the end, she falls for Raj, but tells him that she cannot desert her husband, since she does see God in her husband.
Surinder finally reveals his true identity to her in the final dance competition, which they end up winning.
